Description
Badwater Basin located in Death Valley National Park, is the lowest point in North America, with a depth of 280 ft below sea level. Rainstorms can flood the valley bottom periodically, covering the salt pan with a a sheet of standing water. It does not last long though, because the 1.9 in rainfall is overwhelmed by a 150 in annual evaporation rate. When the basin is floods, some salt dissolves and then is redeposited as clean crystals as water evaporates.
